The problem is that even thermite doesn't completely destroy the platters, and so data can be recovered. Apparently the only way to reliably destroy data is a very strong magnetic field. Plus, magnets are safer to use indoors .

Iiridayn's plan with a magnet is probably your best best.....It's tasteless, odorless and doesn't go boom. (don't forget U can be charged with a terrorist act for lighting a firecracker these days)

also, a word on napalm:

Napalm-B had one great advantage over the original napalm -- ignition can be readily controlled. Napalm is less flammable than gasoline and therefore less hazardous. The more polystyrene in the mixture, the harder it is to ignite. Napalm is actually harder to ignite than might be expected. A match or even a road flare will not ignite napalm. A reliable igniter is used to start napalm-B burning. Thermite is typically used to ignite napalm. Some forms of modern napalm cannot be ignited by a hand grenade.

btw, modern napalm is:

21% Benzene
33% Gasoline
46% Polystyrene

So it is now much safer to use in computers

Bert... how did you make your own rocket launchers? I'm quite interested in this as I have 5 weeks before the official summer holidays start, in that time I will probably not be out every day so I have time to look into such things

This is not something you can screw around with, most of what I use is from years of learning how to properly handle/make the explosives and propellant. The other thing is what was made was high explosive and unstable. For ameatures I'd reccomend a potato cannon and using a gunpowder based explosive for the payload. Simplest is using a battery/spring connector/ and rocket igniter. drill a hole in a soda bottle epoxy a spring to it cut out a couple of small circles out of construction paper and glue that to the bottom of the cap. under that glue a small wad of aluminum foil. Get a roofing nail. Nail needs to be short enought touch the construction paper. drill another small hole and remove the nail and solder a small wire to the nail. place the nail into the spring and use some latex foam to soft glue the nail to the spring. if you can't figure out the rest you do not need to be making this.....
