Iiridayn tells me that there are two ways to build the fighter commander ship. One would slow down the game considerable (like 20 to 30% on average) but would be easy and fast to code. I consider this to be an unacceptable solution. The other approach would require a rewrite to many modules within the game and would take more time than the market did to implement, so roughly three to four months is my best guess. This seems like a long time to wait for planet defenses.

Therefore, we talked about turrets as a ground based equivalent to fighters and a control ship. Turrets would be able to shoot at ships and could be taken out by fighters. You would have to clear turrets before an assault attack could succeed. It would not make planets invincible, but would add one more level of defense to HW planets. Essentially, turrets would be ground based fighters that would be stationary on a single planet.

Iiri tells me turrets would have an insignificant effect on game speed and would be fast and easy to implement.
