From "Actual Changes for Feb 2007".

8. Newbie Arena Modifications (planned for introduction DURING round)

Will allow newbies to obliterate planets to help them prepare for survival in the real arena via elimination of chains. Also, newbies with more than one month experience will be forced to enter real arena at time of their second end of round event, and stars will be reset when new players enter real arena, so any additional stars gained in the new player arena are lost and any points gained or other stats are also lost upon entry to the real arena, but planets, ships, and resources gained in the newbie arena are retained upon entry to the real arena.

Was just wondering when this would be added, and if it is posted when it is added. Asking because I need to capture another planet but I already have 25, and it will be nice get get rid of my chain.
And just to clarify the stars are the ones beside you name right? not the actually suns? or will that even affect us in any way?

The stars next to your name signify how many months you've been playing the game; one signifies you've been playing for one month, two for two months, etc.

If you mean the suns, no, they don't affect you. They're just there to look pretty.

Hopefully it'll be in soon I need to get rid of some of my planets.
As well, with being able to see your own nearby planets.

In a few days, newbies will be able to LEAVE planets. After looking at potential problems with obliteration (which could make it impossible to compete mission if planets to be probed and taken by newbie where captured and then obliterated), we will implement LEAVE planet option for newbies instead of obliterate.

Since only planets from systems where you own a planet move with you to the real arena, leaving planets in newbie arena serves the same purpose as obliteration in real arena.

If newbies will be able only leave planets, then they won't get rid of chains by checking nearby. They will have to check coordinates manually and use probes to find new planets. I think abillity to leave planet in new arena don't solve newbies problems.

Ah. Good point. Had not thought of that.

Okay, I suppose we will just have to allow obliterate, and deal with problems created by that when they happen if they happen.

Perhaps we can do something like once 50 planets have been obliterated, you drop automatically to the real arena.

My concern is that someone might decide to stay in newbie arena and do a lot of planet obliterating in a systematic way, which could make it impossible for some newbies to finish their missions even if they are in immunity. However, this is probably an unlikely scenario.
