Fortran (used to be FORTRAN) is still the language of choice for heavy-duty mathematics like linear algebra. Native exponentiation and proper handling of complex (imaginary) numbers also makes it really useful for simulation and serious physical modeling.

If you need to calculate, for example, a blast radius and shockwave potential, you probably should be using Fortran. That's all I will say about that.

OK, so it's not as cool as scratch (http://scratch.mit.edu) or processing (http://processing.org). It still has its place in the world.
