It is all part of the game! We each have our own tactics and playing style.
Take it for what this is worth. My two military hero's are:
Rommel (who had defence lines in North Africa he called Dragons Teeth)
Stonewall Jackson (hit them hard where they don't expect you, when they don't expect you), he hit the railroad depot in Grafton WV (Va at the time depending on the historian) and stole a bunch of locomotives and carted them across the mountains to a southern rail head.
Another person that I admired in unorthox tatics was Richard Sterling of the Desert Long Range Patrol. But he was more into deception and the like on his missions. Not well suited for this game. But in the past there have been those with more then one account and membership in more then one clan. But these were found out and the player paid the price.
It is still my personel goal to get rid of inactive players planets. But production planets of active players is another thing.
Good hunting, but the planet count is getting pretty low. Not that it worries me I still have an extensive target list if I decide to go after some one. Plenty of resourses and if needed could conduct a all out war.

Luckily though Stonewall's tactics fit in quite nicely with this game. The problem with Rommel is that defensive tactics are always dependent on having a stringer will than the enemy
