Send'em out at intervals of 800 (while you have the upgrades) and cross your fingers.

+/- 1400 if you're probing around your planets (as shown in the SL handbook). 800 if you wanna probe the galaxy away from your planets.

I recommend sending the probes a long way away from your planets. It takes about ten probes on average to find a planet, since the real arena is a lot less dense (on purpose) than the new player arena.

Another way to find planets is to use the warp to find them. The warp is somewhere within 20 spaces of the center of the universe, on the 0 z-axis, and it moves every 30 minutes to a new location on both ends of the warp. About a third of the time, the warp finds new planets.

one more suggestion. there are MANY planets in the area from -1000 to +1000 which is called the battlezone. They need to be harvested frequently, as there are a lot of players there who will take planets that become profitable targets (too much resources on them), but if you harvest them a lot, these are easy production planets to find. One disadvantage to battlezone planets is they are clustered and can not be obliterated, so the area is a massive "chain" of planets, but since they can not be obliterated and hidden, many players are also reluctant to capture them, so battle zone planets can be very useful as x20 production point planets that are reasonable safe from being captured relative to chains of planets held in other areas of the galaxy.
