When the planet finds nearby planets is it measuring in total distance or is it 1000 along each axis?

i have only ever probed in the blank space that the warp takes me to sometimes, got a few good planets out of it as well |

Probing always gets some good planets... depends on the amount of probes used... And ofcrouse how friggin' smart you use them
