I would say an ever-shrinking universe is probably not the solution to our problems, though I agree with whitbread that eventually we will need more planets, especially at the rate they're being gone through. I think we also need to not go back to the old ways, as it would give players that remember how it all worked back then a significant advantage, while the rest of us would have to learn it all.
