You say the merge was too long ago? Nah, Scotland was forced under English rule in the reign of King Charles II, nigh on 400 years ago, yet 3 years ago they regained their own Parliament, setting back about 400 years in progress for England to "Englify" all of the UK.

Also Wales is a Protectorate (I believe, I may be wrong) of England and could easily declare indepenance if the English Wannabees (as Hsirhc so very well put it) would listen to their people and declare they are independant, however financially the nation could suffer from such a move.

Also VS, the different States do not have their own sport teams who can play on an international level, yet the 4 "sections" of the UK can, so sportingly Wales IS recognised as a country, it has it's own Football and Rugby teams, indeed the only sport where we always compete as a collection is Athletics, and with good reason because we do far better than we would individually.

You want an example of why Wales could be better off? Look at rugby, they won the 6 Nations individual from Scotland, England and Ireland, yet when those 4 come together into "The Lions" they take a spanking off New Zealand.

IM sure most athletes were English, i know almost all sailors were
Anyway msot training would have gone on abroad anyway

Well since the two main sports I do are sailing and rowing I can comfortably say that Wales are crap in both
They don't have large sucessful clubs or famous sportspeople
However Im at Abersoch in a few weeks for the National Championships
